A Look Back

I miss the old web.

This is my attempt at bringing it back, bit by bit.

I remember my first learning about web development in highschool. I took a web development course and learned the foundations of the webโ€“ no nonsense. Strictly learning about HTML, CSS, and just a dash of Javascript, every student was an author, a creator, a developer for the web.

The initial taste of creation hasn’t left my mouth.

What’s old is new again

It seems like more and more, I see new websites being made with this nod towards the early web. Cheeky interfaces, gifs, and just pure fun on the web is something that I hope is not just a nostalgic trend for us who we raised by this early version of the internet.

Some examples from sites that I like include:

Inspiration

Much of my inspiraiton for this project are from three sources:

  1. Marisa of designteamofoneon Instagram. Her page shares “niche but cool [internet] finds
  2. Omar’s Books. His digital bookshelf caught Marisa’s eye and it found it’s way to me. You can see the similarities between his and mine.
  3. My childhood’s home bookshelf. When I think about bookshelves, I can’t help but remember the 6 level bookshelf we had in our home.

Design

The design approach is reminiscent of a real life bookshelf. It should feel as if you are in this dark ether with a bookshelf presented before you.

My attention towards every interaction was thoughtful. From the way the books fall in when they load, to the sound effects when you click around, I want the experience to be enjoyable, nostalgic, and fun.
